Lawsuit Filed Against Kaiser for Religious Discrimination

Richard Bowie

Kaiser terminates employee after he submitted a written request for religious accommodation to be exempted from the company’s COVID-19 vaccine policy.

Case Summary

Advocates recently filed a lawsuit on behalf of Richard Bowie, whose employer, Kaiser, failed to accommodate his legal religious objections to the employer’s COVID-19 vaccine mandates. Instead of providing accommodations for Mr. Bowie, like they did for other employees, Kaiser terminated Mr. Bowie from his position. Kaiser failed to engage in an interactive accommodation process and did not indicate that providing an accommodation to Mr. Bowie would cause an undue burden. Mr. Bowie alleges violation of his rights under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and California’s Fair Employment and Housing Act.
