Fired for Silent Display of Patriotism

A Florida man was fired for displaying the American flag on his own vehicle.

 
Case Summary

Advocates is filing a lawsuit against Mediterra Community Association, Inc. for unlawful discrimination. James Litzenberger was fired from his position with Mediterra for flying an American flag on his vehicle. Mr. Litzenberger’s supervisor required him to take the flag down, relaying that the flag was “too redneck” for display. When Mr. Litzenberger refused to remove the flag from his vehicle, he was immediately fired and escorted by the police off of Mediterra property. Mr. Litzenberger raises claims under Title VII and Florida’s employment discrimination statutes.
