RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

General Information

The Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment protects the right to practice religion without government interference. This includes the right to hold religious beliefs, to worship, to pray, to proselytize, and to engage in religious customs and traditions. It is the one freedom that protects conscience. It prevents the government from forcing individuals to surrender their core values and beliefs.

Though it is a fundamental right enshrined in the United States Constitution, it has become increasingly under attack. Today we see this through discrimination in the workplace, censorship on social media platforms, and government-imposed restrictions. Government overreach on religious freedom was unprecedented during the COVID-19 pandemic as local governments imposed harsh restrictions on religious exercise and even penalized churches for keeping their doors open. This unchecked power has influenced the medical field, causing thousands to lose their jobs because they will not take a religiously objectionable vaccine.
