Despite securing a hard-fought grassroots victory, Mercy Peña is now battling an orchestrated effort to strip her of her duly elected seat on the Greenfield School Board. Running on a platform of parental rights and academic excellence, Peña won against an incumbent backed by the political establishment, earning 1,012 votes to 1,008—despite having no major financial or institutional support. But instead of respecting the will of the voters, her opponents immediately sought to overturn the election, using legal loopholes and bureaucratic challenges in an attempt to force a new vote.
